UNDERSTANDING THE MILITARY SYSTEM OF JUSTICE

A commanding officer can involuntarily separate a military member from the armed forces on several different grounds—from poor performance to substance abuse problems to allegations of a pattern of misconduct. Generally, these matters will go before a military administrative separation board. A person facing separation from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard has a right to know the factual allegations against them and to respond to the matter.
